"Works extremely well for me" 2006-10-25

I've been using this rice cooker for quite a while, mainly to cook oat groats on the "porridge" setting. They take a while to cook, so if your mornings are hurried, I would definitely set them up the night before and use the timer to start them an hour before you awake. The cooker will keep them warm quite well. (1/3 cup oat groats, 1 cup of water for one person, with the result being more like a cooked grain than traditional oatmeal.)

The brown rice setting doesn't do "keep warm", as the manual says: you need to take that out when done.

I've had no problem with the cooking pot chipping, but I use only the plastic spatula that came with it to dip stuff out, or a nylon spoon: no metal. And I wash the cooking pot (removeable, nonstick) by hand: very easy, very quick.

The steamer function is not worth the effort: tends to overcook. The risotto recipes I done have worked great. (I got "The Ultimate Rice Cooker Cookbook," which has many good recipes.)

The most important part of choosing a rice cooker is to pick one that has a good quality inside pot because if this 'non-stick coated inner pan' chiped, you are so not going to keep using it since you will worry if you will eat that 'chips' with rice. Sure this cooker works for me for about 3 years, but right after one year, the inner pan began to chip. I have two other neighbors who also bought this one and have chipped inner pan. They just told me to ignore it. But after reading a few healthy related articles, I decide to throw this $100 rice cooker away and buy another one. I can't risk my family's health on $100. I got a new one from Sanyo which cost around $90 for 5 cups. I especially did research on their inner pan. Apparently their pan has special technology on coating so it should has no problem. I will see. But from the look, I can tell that Sanyo's inner pan has better quality. If you plan to spend $100 on rice cooker, you should either try Sanyo or Zojirushi. Also you can get a better deal at Chinese grocery store (I mean big ones). The only problem at Chinese store is you have to exchange in 7 days not 30 days, and you can't return if you used it. I bought both of my rice cookers at chinese store and they did not have any problems.

Cars, or new ones, anyway, should be able to do one thing: move people from one place to another. If it can't do that, it's not a car, and I find it reasonable to expect my car to do it. Of course, I have the choice of riding around in a Geo Metro, or in a Porsche, but at their core, they do the same thing. Similarly, I believe that any rice cooker, not just a 150 dollar rice cooker, should produce well-cooked rice every time it's used. Common sense tells me that manufacturers test these things hundreds of times before putting them into production, and so by the time it's on my counter, it should be pretty much foolproof.

Reality doesn't agree with me, however. For four years, I've tried 6 or 7 different rice cookers with varied success. The type of rice that I make, sticky Japanese rice, is part of the problem. Most rice cookers in the United States are designed for long-grain, non-sticky rice, and so most US brands (e.g. Rival, Faberware, etc.) produce dry and/or unevenly cooked calrose rice. The only success I had in the past was an old Panasonic rice cooker, inherited from my father. Sadly, I damaged the bowl about a year ago, and it stopped working. After that, I tried making rice on the stove, but measuring out the water and rice to the same level every time frustrated me.

I had heard about fuzzy logic rice cookers a number of years ago, and, after working in an appliance store for a few months, I decided to buy one about two weeks ago. It works, and works well. Although I haven't tried out the timer function, and I'm a little wary to put any piece of my $150 rice cooker into the dishwasher, I give it my recommendation. If you need a general rice cooker that adapts well to any kind of rice you put in it and have 150 bucks to spare, invest in this product. There are a few other brands of fuzzy logic rice cookers out there, and I imagine that they all do the job and do it well. I've sold comparable products to my customers, and I've only heard praise for them. The Panasonic/National brand was the cheapest I could find, and it works just fine for me.

So, in short, If you're shopping for a new one, skip the Geo and get the Porsche; skip the cheap stuff, and put your money into something that does the job right.

"Item not included as advertised - Panasonic Rice Cooker handled through Ritz Camera" 2009-11-08

At the end of September, I ordered a Panasonic Rice Cooker from Amazon. Amazon advertised, and still advertises, at least as of today, that a Deluxe steaming basket would be included.

This order from Panasonic was ordered through Ritz Camera.

However, the steaming basket was not included in the order. I contacted Ritz Camera, but they insisted that the steaming basket was not originally meant to be included. I told them that it was advertised as being part of the ordered product. They told me to contact the manufacturer. A series of phone calls included connections with switchboards in India and the Philippines. (I will let Lou Dobbs deal with the issue of jobs being out-sourced to other countries while many Americans face unemployment. That is another issue.) Only a few calls were answered by home-grown Americans, even though the product is sold by Panasonic but handled by Ritz Camera. Nothing was resolved by telephone. During the last call, the phone answerer, supposedly representing the manufacturer, blamed Amazon. However, I cannot contact Amazon directly.

Had Ritz Camera merely sent the steaming basket as advertised, the problem would have been terminated. However. Ritz sent me a $25 coupon which can only be redeemed for future orders, and only after purchasing something again online. The coupon is useless to me. Ritz asked me to remove my negative review, but the $25 coupon was not sufficient impetus for me to do so.

Part of the attraction of the rice cooker as originally advertised was the steaming basket.

I used to be in the advertising business many years ago, so I realize the seriousness of false advertising. However, I do not blame Amazon, because Amazon has always made good on problems with orders. I have been a good customer and have even written many reviews of DVD films and books. Amazon, in my view, in a good company. They make good on their promises and allow even negative reviews of films and other products to be shown to the public, unedited.

I do have a problem with a product that is not delivered as advertised. Let the buyer beware.

I don't know what the other reviewer was doing wrong but my oatmeal came outstanding and the brown rice come out equally well. A very easy to use rice cooker with many advanced features that the Zojirushi does not have. I paid $180 dollar Zojiushi that played Mozart when the rice was done and died shortly after one year(along with a Zojirushi bread maker); I think I will stick with Panasonic which are more dependable especially having using them for the last 20 years with no problem, just great rice

I bought this cooker for cooking brown rice and steel cut oats. The brown rice came out acceptable, but nothing to write home about. I tried oats twice and both times it was a disaster. It boiled over and caused a huge mess even though I followed the porridge instructions perfectly. Well, I think I did. It may have the worst English translation that I've ever read.

"After the beef sound, the rice cooker will automatically switch to keep warm mode." Mooooo!

I'm returning this thing today.

I searched all over for a great rice cooker, as I'm a newbie at this. I needed a good price, since I wasn't sure how well I'd catch on, and am not a gourmet. This worked out SO perfectly--I LOVE the non stick insides. It came with the paddle, but no steamer, but I wanted this for rice and I think you can buy the steamer if you need it, separately. The only things I would advise are when you make rice (I've only ever made full pots) use 2.5 cups of rice, but fill the water line to the 3 cup line after putting the rice in the pot, and RINSE RINSE RINSE the rice before cooking, no exception. These 2 things will give you perfect rice in about 30 minutes or so. It's a little less rice output than advertised, but it doesn't take long and again, it comes out perfectly. Great, great item!!

Ok, I purchased this rice cooker expecting the same level of quality that has made panasonic so popular. And I must say, I am SO disappointed.

Pro:

- great non-stick, none of your dishes will stick to the pan and washing is a breeze

Cons:

- the lid has no hole on top. Instead, the design is such that the whole lid wobbles off the pan when the pressure is too high, SPILLING the contents all over the counter. I have had to clean my counter (and all the stuff on it) numerous times, cursing the makers of this rice cooker.

-there is a gap between the pan and the body. So when the spillage mentioned above happens, it will leave a sticky coating on the interior of the cooker itself.

- again, due to the absence of a hole on top, the residue collects, not around a nice little spot, but around the ENTIRE lid.

Summing up, the only reason to buy this cooker would be the pan. And after your first use, you will realize that that is simply not good enough of a reason.

This is the third rice cooker that I have owned, and I judge it to be almost as good as the best one, a Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5-1/2-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer, Premium White. This Panasonic model cooks a larger volume of rice, but both are very similar in feature set.

For me, the pluses of this model are that you can set it to cook brown rice before you leave for work, and have the rice ready, timed to coincide with dinner. Brown rice is better for you, but it takes so long to cook that I wouldn't be able to eat it without a rice cooker, simply because by the time I get home the last thing I want to do is wait two hours for rice. This rice cooker performs admirably on that front. I tested both the white and the brown rice features before writing this review, and it is pretty good at delivering the rice within an acceptable time frame.

The reason this rice cooker gets 4 starts instead of 5 stars is this. For fuzzy-logic rice cookers, ideally you want a computer that responds to the level of humidity in the steam emitted, so that it "knows" when the rice is done not just by how long the rice cooked, but based on actual data that it collects from the rice as it is cooking. This little feature means that mistakes like adding a little too much water won't hurt the rice in the end. I found that this machine did not compensate for those little errors as well as my Zojirushi, and sometimes I ended up with mushier rice than I was expecting. This is a truly minor thing, though, and if you are capable of using a measuring cup, you can easily avert this problem by adding the correct amounts of water.

Having lived in Japan for nine years, and with a Japanese wife, we eat a lot of rice cooked Japanese style. This rice cooker, although made for the American market, has a lot of what the better Japanese rice cookers have. The inner bowl is big and well-made. It can cook 10 cups, but we never do that much. The rice turns out well, and the cooker is easy to clean.

This rice cooker seems to have "fuzzy logic" to cook things better, and it says it can be used for a variety of things other than rice. We have not used it to cook anything else, and I doubt we will. But it works well for us -- better than most rice cookers on the American market.

This fuzzy logic rice cooker is a great in some ways, and aggravating in some others.

OK, the good stuff first: It makes fantastic rice. Put the rice in the pan, add the suggested amount of water, press a couple of buttons, and come back in an hour to the best rice you've ever had at home. I make a lot of basmati rice. To be honest, before I got this cooker, I kind of sneered at the idea of a rice cooker. I mean, it's just not that hard to make rice. But when I used the cooker, I realized that on my best day, the rice I make by hand isn't quite as perfectly done as with this cooker. OK, I'm not too big a man to admit I was wrong.

The so-so: Cleanup requires cleaning the pan, the gasket and the steam releaser valve. Not hard, but a little more work than just cleaning a single pot.

There are a limited number of setting on the cooker, so you need to shoehorn your favorite rice into the choices presented if you are getting funky.

The not so hot: The instruction booklet is really poor, particularly for Panasonic (who are usually good about such things). The clock battery is not user replaceable. Huh? That's stupid. It's not clear if the battery is required to have the unit work properly in timer mode or if its only purpose is to hold setting and clock time when not on power.

And then there is the if-they-had-just-gone-the-extra-step-this-would-out-of-this-world-but-they-didn't-and-it's-enough-to-make-you-scream: This unit can be used as a slow cooker ("Crock Pot"). Unfortunately, the only setting you have control over is start. That's right, you can't control the heat. The unit uses fuzzy logic to do the cooking, and that's incredibly good--way better than your normal slow cooker. But YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE HEAT. That means you can't really use recipes that call for setting the heat on low, or on medium or on whatever. You only get the heat that the rice cooker thinks you should use, and that may well not be the heat you need. Ugh! So close Panasonic. One more control and you could have made one device to rule them all. Instead...

Not to end on a bad note, I will reiterate that as a rice cooker, it's a star. And if you think the temperature it picks is good, then maybe it'll be a star for you in terms of slow cooking as well. But beware that it isn't going to be slow cooking recipe friendly. And that's a darn shame.

First of all, the SR-MS102 is a FIVE cup cooker and the SR-MS182 is a TEN cup...the little ordering buttons on top both say "10-cup". Hopefully amazon will correct that.

I wondered what the difference is between these fuzzy logic cookers and plain old rice cookers, so I looked for some info on it. What I found was, basically to cook rice, there are 4 stages: standing in water, boiling, absorbing, and resting. At each stage, heat is used differently, and with a machine such as this, it isn't just "on" but instead, it knows when to turn it up or down (based on type of rice, volume, etc. that we program in.) It also has a keep-warm setting (which I really like.) With this type of programming the machine can be used to make things like rice (of course!), but also risotto, pilaf, steel-cut oats, polenta, grits, steaming veggies or any other moist cooking, although you will likely need to experiment to you get your consistencies that are exact to your preference. My results were excellent with both white rice and veggies. The rice almost tasted sweet it was so good. There are recipes in the book for different rices, porridges, soup, slow cooking, main courses (yes, you can put meat in this...nice!) even cake (when you don't feel like heating up your whole kitchen with your oven!)

Ok- its a rice cooker. And a rice warmer. And supposedly a cake maker and slow cooker and food warmer too. And a veggie steamer.

All I know is that this thing cooks rice like nobody's business. It does what it says its going to do...and it does it remarkably well.

I have had this product for a little over two months now and have used it approximately 10 times. To cook rice. It makes the rice perfectly, not sticky or soupy or burt or any other variation other than perfectly done. The instructions were a little odd to figure out and took some rereading to get them right. The on-board timer and cooking computer input display thingy work well and are good at helping you know when rice is done and everything is ready to go.

I haven't used it as a cake maker (although a recipe is included) nor have I used it as a slow cooker or anything like that. I selected this product for its main purpose. I wanted to cook rice and have it ready to go when the stir fry was just getting finished. It takes about 40 mins from start to finish for a 6 cup batch. (cooked).

The measuring cup isnt an english "cup" of measure but somewhere a little bit smaller. So be sure to hang on to it as it is what the manufacturer uses at its standard measure. The non stick inside pot is a snap to clean and all the parts and pieces that need to come apart do- and go back together easily as well.

I have to give this a 5 star review because it does what is was intended to do. I have no issues with it and am glad that it is in my home. We eat a fairly large amount of rice and it has been a wonderful appliance to use for that purpose. But if I want to make a cake, I have an oven- if I want to use a slow cooker, I have a crock pot. For rice...I now have this wonderful thing...and I love it!

i am a flight attendant. most of the time there is no meal service. also, we are runing from plane to plane no time to stop and get a hot meal. also, it's get expensive. room service is over-priced, and it's the same old stuff at every hotel. with this little work horse i can bring food from home and heat it up so i can have a hot meal. i have used it to heat up more than rice. i use it for soup, chili, oatmeal, even left over pasta with sauce. this may sound expensive, but will pay for itself if you use it as often as i do.

Although I've only owned this cooker for a lil over a month, I feel qualified to speak to it's usefulness. A bit pricey for the capacity, it's effectiveness can't be overstated. For family of 3 or less this cooker makes plenty of rice. I especially like that it can make one serving of rice fairly quickly. No fancy electronics, just a plain timed cooker. Mix the rice and water (or stock), flip the switch and when it turns off you have perfect rice. I found domestic packaged rice like Uncle Ben's to need proportions of 1:1 water to rice. Imported sticky rice from India or Asia needs a lil less water, like .8:1. You'll find the proportions you need. I hope this cooker lasts longer than at least one reviewer claimed. Once outside the warranty period, if the timer fails (I'm sure it uses a simple bi-metal timer), I just wire in a cheap electronic timer from Radio Shack.

If you are looking for a rice cooker just to cook rice, buy this. Do not buy those fancy ones which is more expensive and takes 1 hr to cook the rice. I bought this cooker as a replacement for the old one I have because the membrane of the container is wearing out. Thumbs up on this. This is a very nice rice cooker and an excellent value. Unlike other rice cookers in the same price range, this cooker does as well with jasmine, calrose, basmati and brown rice as it does with white rice. No one likes mushy or crunchy rice, especially Kitchen Monkey Boy. Not a problem with this cooker.

It's definitely not the same quality as the high end cookers, but hey, you didn't pay $200 for it either. Shut up and eat your nummy rice!

Rice would not stick to the bottom! - which is AWESOME!!. Other cookers - ud have to soak it and wait for the rice to come out -. I have cooked rice for 10 people comfortably in this cooker - very efficient.

The only problem i had was sometimes rice gets sticky - especially if you use the thai scented rice - i tend to leave the rice in for about 20 minutes after it turns to the keep warm mode- overall no complaints!

I did not like it one bit . I tried making rice using the water ratio differently each time and it still did not give the proper texture. Either it was too dry or too mushy. I own a panasonic rice cooker which works perfectly just that the container has lost its nonstick coating. Wass hoping ot replace it but i guess I'll have to look elsewhere this didnot work for me

I have been using this rice cooker for a couple of months now and it works fine. I wanted one without a non-stick coating to replace my old Panasonic which was too small and had the Teflon coating which was peeling off. It is easy to clean up if you soak it for a few minutes. At first I was getting very soggy rice as I was following the instructions incorrectly - you should add the rice to the pan and THEN add the water as it says, not the other way round. Doh! And soak the rice in the pot before turning it on. Simple. I don't bother washing the rice first. It does tend to bubble at the top even with just 2 cups of rice, but not that bad. Always let stand for about 10 minutes after cooking to avoid sticking. All in all I am very happy with it.

I purchased this as a replacement for a 5+ year old (and smaller) Panasonic rice cooker that fell on the floor a few too many times (the on/off switch/lever eventually broke.)

Like the other one, this one cooks rice perfectly, is easy to clean, and remarkably easy to cook rice. Add rice, add water, press the one button it has...a while later, out comes perfect rice.

Having not owned any other makes or models (other than the other Panasonic), I can't say this is better than the competition - but it does speak volumes for Panasonic that I have no need or desire to look elsewhere for a great rice cooker.

Highly recommended, and would buy again.

I've had this rice cooker for three years now, and I've never had a problem with it. Using it is so simple! Just put in the rice and water, and there's only one button to press down: "cook" You don't have to do anything else to it.

And even though there is no "warmer" setting, you can actually leave the rice there for a while if you need to finish up the rest of dinner, and it will stay warm. The pot and spoon are both easy to clean, and the first of these is non-stick. Great product!!
